How to wear leggings - Ask Brassy!

I received a question from a reader asking me "What is the right way to wear leggings?" Although I am not an expert at all I can give my opinion on how I wear them....not necessarily "the right way" (wink).

I wear them as pants (or should I say as an extension of whatever I'm wearing on top). I don't ever wear them with a short top where my booty shows. I always pair them with a longer top, a too short baby doll dress or layered under a skirt or dress for an added pop of color or texture. Every site you visit will say "leggings are not pants" and I agree. You can wear them as "pants" on your legs but NOT as pants like jeans where you wear a short top. Make sense?? :)

I wear them most paired with a flowing or loose top. I feel like it balances out the outfit and often wear them with tall boots too. I always have the crotch area covered (for lack of a better word). No short tops or ones that are too fitted.

Plus they are comfy! If I'm going to add this layer it is really nice that they fit and feel different than jeans. Do I wear them a lot? Not really...but they are nice inexpensive option to have in my closet.

The Frisky.com has a "funny" article on the DO's and DON'Ts of wearing of leggings.
Or there is a GREAT article with simple tips and photos from Adam Glassman on Oprah.com as well.

I hope this helps! NOW - tell me How DO YOU wear them?
Do you have a style/fashion question for me? I'm no expert but I can give you my spin on it! Email me! I'm happy to answer it in a future "how to" post!

  1. I love leggings because I'm short and too cheap to pay for constant alterations to get pants hemmed. I love them with long tops and boots or flats. I try to strike that balance between fun and fashion and acting my age lol. Love the looks you picked out.

  3. I wear leggings almost every day in the winter. I had a boss at a restaurant say very clearly: "Leggings are not pants." I tend to agree. Anything thin enough for someone to see your underpants and tight enough to give you camel toe doe not count as pants! Good advice to wear them over longer tops and shorter skirts and dresses. that's what I do.

    1. I think it's harder to find tops, etc to go with legging for little kids. I mean - companies cater to tshirt and easy tops regular tshirt length. So her wardrobe is probably already built that way ;) Maybe try pairing the short top and leggings with a little skirt it hid "those areas" ;) good luck!!!

  6. I love, love, love leggings, but definitely only if my behind is sufficiently covered. No crotch area showing here, lol. Unfortunately, some people don't get that, because I've seen a lot more than I'd like to on several occasions. Thanks for getting the word out about proper legging procedure. :-)

  7. I wear leggings everyday (and will for the next few months) because they are the only pants I can get on and off and up and down on my own with one hand (broken wrist). I am in the market for inexpensive patterned ones that are pretty thick. Any suggestions? I am dying of fashion boredom over here.
